ECOTEL® is a prestigious environmental certification designed by HVS' Sustainability Services specifically for the hospitality sector. This certification recognizes outstanding achievement along the triple bottomline: environmental, social and fiscal parameters.

Why Ecotel?
The ECOTEL® certification rates hotels and restaraunts along a three-tier system of achievement based on their environmental, social and fiscal achievements. Offered by HVS, this prestigious certification combines the strength of HVS’s expertise in the hospitality industry.

ECOTEL® was developed in 1994 by HVS in association with the Rocky Mountain Institute, USA with the help of engineering and hospitality experts. HVS is aglobal leading consulting and services organization focused on the hotel, restaurant, shared ownership, gaming, and leisure industries.

The HVS Sustainability Services team provides full assistance in setting and achieveing sustainability targets for hospitality businesses and chains. It combines research with advances in knowledge and technology to engineer environmentally responsible and practical solutions for the hospitality industry. It provides the complete policy, infrastructural and operational framework for the daily running of an environmentally-friendly hotel and restaurant. HVS Sustainability provides a forensic analysis of the sustainability of businesses and provides detailed reports that measure environmental, social and money-saving opportunities.

The ECOTEL® Certification is based on five Globes or areas of environmental and social responsibility, and training enabling excellence in delivery standards.Together, they result in making the the hotel economically viable, and environmentally and socially responsible. The five criteria are:

• Environment Commitment
• Waste Management
• Energy Management
• Water Management
• Employee Education and Community Involvement

The certification is valid for two years and hotels and restaurants seeking an upgrade or recertification must apply at the end of two years.

The Benefits of Membership:

• Recognition of hotel-specific green operations or practices.
• Broader in scope than a number of other certification programs. Ecotel recognizes social: both in commitment to employees and the community within which the busines resides; and fiscal parameters as being equally important as the environmental in defining sustainability. We measure member businesses along this triple bottomline.
• Spans the positioning spectrum. The certification is not just restricted to hotels with higher positioning and luxury orientation, but spans the width of the positioning spectrum recognising high levels of environment commitment and environment-friendly operations in hotels and restaurants.
• Specific to hospitality. Being managed by HVS, a global consulting giant in hospitality, it is tailored specifically to this industry.
• Rigorous standards. The ECOTEL methodology for certification based upon the Five Globes is very well researched and regularly updated to stay current with scientific advances and international research.
