Montego Bay, Jamaica, October 22, 2019: In consideration of the storms and hurricanes that have struck various nation islands in the Caribbean in recent years, as well as the ongoing negative impact of the sargassum that has plagued other parts of the region, CHICOS Chairman Parris Jordan has added academic expertise to this year’s event. Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Dr. Richard Lo Pinto, a biology professor for the School of Natural Sciences at the New Jersey college, will share updates and findings to guide hospitality stakeholders on measures to be taken to protect the land and oceanscape.
“As a native of the Caribbean and frequent resident, visitor, and business traveler to the area, the sustainability of the destination is of utmost and personal importance to me,” says Jordan. “And now more than ever, understanding the sources that impact the environment and, ultimately, hospitality in general, is critical. Our attendees not only need to understand root causes and effects, but also how to take action to retain the beauty and resources. It is imperative that we present some aspect of this type of learning to our agenda this year.”
Having held numerous positions of government and in the private sector, all related to decision-making in his area of research and passion, Dr. Lo Pinto previously served as Head of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s “Program on Biological Testing of Effluents and Receiving Waters,” as well as Assistant to the Director of Analysis and Regulations for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, among other reputable roles. It is through the former position that he established a system now used throughout Europe for controlling water pollution. He has consulted for a variety of industries and state and federal government agencies.
While Dr. Lo Pinto’s environmental research extends from coral reef food chains to water quality in temperate lakes and coastal waters, his most globally impactful work focuses on quantifying and controlling water pollution. He has authored a number of papers on eco-toxicology, eutrophication, and physiological ecology. His scientific papers on biological methods of pollution assessment have been presented at meetings in the United States; Japan; Italy, at the invitation of the scientific arm of European Union (Ispra); Eastern Europe, invited by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Slovak Academy of Sciences; Romania, as Plenary speaker at the 18th Int'l Conf. on Chem. & Chem. Engineering; and China, as Session Chair for the 5th Int'l Congress on the Environment.
The challenges of storms, seaweed, climate change, and other “crises” that have plagued the Caribbean of late will be the topic of one of CHICOS’ breakout sessions. The panel will include representatives of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, Wyndham Hotels, Trust Hospitality, the International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Fairleigh Dickenson University, and BVK Communications.
